PHD FIRE AND INDUSTRIAL

The study follows the fields of the study for the master's degree Fire Protection Engineering and Industrial Safety, Safety Engineering, Safety and Security Planning, Engineering Safety of the Persons and Property and other fields of study for the master's degree including safety and security elements, and is not closed to the graduates of other fields of study for the master degree who have subsequently acquired theoretical knowledge and practical experiences in the area of the safety and security. In the framework of the admission procedure, candidates' qualifications for dealing with the selected topic of the dissertation are assessed.

The doctoral degree study in the study program Fire Protections and Industrial Safety provides the highest level of higher institution education in fire protection and safety. The study follows the fields of study for the master's degree Fire Protections Engineering and Industrial Safety, Safety Engineering, Safety and Security Planning, Engineering Safety of the Persons and Property and other fields of study for the master's degree including safety and security elements, and is not closed to graduates of other fields of study for the master degree who have the subsequently acquired theoretical knowledge and practical experience in the area of the safety and security. It is designed for extra gifted individuals oriented to development and research, including applied research. The study is based on the multidisciplinarity of this branch of the science and its comprehensiveness, and thus it is simultaneously of extending and deepening character making it possible not only to acquaint the doctoral candidate in detail with scientific principles, methods and tools of the specific specialization of the doctoral applicant but also to understand relations in the wide context of the branch of science and relations to the other natural, technical and the social sciences.

  • Career paths
  • Graduate’s employment

The graduate can find employment, especially in the research and development, education, organizations providing expert services in the areas of fire protection and industrial safety, crisis management, populations protection, safety analyses and in testing and development laboratories, can hold managerial positions in the state administrations connected especially with conception preparation and in management of the companies and organizations.

Admission requirements:

Diploma (follow-up) master’s degree;

Diploma supplement;

A document proving the fulfillment of the condition of the proper completion of the studies in (follow-up) master degree program if the education was obtained abroad (not applicable equivalent documents, e.g. from the Slovak Republic).

Language certificate. The student is required to demonstrate their ability to study in the chosen language. In the case of studying in the Czech language, it is sufficient to submit proof of a university degree completed in the Czech or Slovak language; otherwise, the candidate must submit a certificate proving their knowledge of the Czech language at B1 level. In the case of studying in the English language, it is sufficient to submit proof of a university degree completed in the English language; otherwise, the candidate must submit a certificate proving their knowledge of English at B1 level (e.g. TOEFL or IELTS). If the information on teaching in English is not given on the document of the previous education, it is necessary to provide the so-called “Medium of instructions”.

Discover – Research projects, consultancy and project implementation. Promoting awareness and undertaking public advocacy around safety:

The IITGN Safety Centre undertakes a vigorous program of safety research, consultations and project implementation in the formal and informal sectors. Some of the major consultancy projects currently in the progress include Seismic design criteria for the metro structures for MEGA, Identification of an Optimal Disinfectant for the Preservation of the RO Purified Water and Safe Cities. Several research projects at the PhD and Master’s levels have been undertaken by the faculty. These include computational modeling of the condensed phase aerosols, cognitive engineering for process safety, study of human factors in the process control and alarm management directed towards preventing accidents in chemical plants and design of inherently safe chemical plants. A number of undergraduate projects have also been initiated including the development of an Indian Fire Incident Database and the development of the Android App for fire reporting. The Safety Centre recently incorporated ‘sustainability’ into its research themes and has also undertaken a project to evaluate safety practices among small and medium-scale enterprises in the Gujarat Chemical Industries.

Outreach:

The Safety Centre conducts conferences, workshops, seminars and training for researchers, academicians, safety professionals and policymakers around the world to advance their expertise, professional knowledge and skills and to introduce them to the state-of-the-art. Several workshops, training programs and short courses have been organized that cover topics such as Disaster Mitigations, Confined Masonry, Profess Safety Management, Seismic Retrofitting, Seismic Design of the Reinforced Concrete Buildings and Earth and Rock filled Dams, Fire Safety, geotechnical Aspects of the Earthquake Engineering, Soil-Structure Interaction, Fire Investigations, Enclosure Fire Dynamics, Industrial Hazard Identification and Process Safety. In addition, the Centre organizes the biennial International Conference on the Safety (ICS) covering all areas of Safety (Design and Operations, Regulations and Standards, Planning and Economics, Risk management, Testing, Behavioral and occupational safety) spread across various sectors such as the buildings and structures, consumer, fire, industrial, process, construction and transportation and informal sectors. A symposium with a special focus on process safety is also organized every year.

Teach:

The Safety Centre endeavors to develop and integrate safety-related courses into its graduate and undergraduate curriculum. Safety-related elective courses currently being offered include Introduction to Fire Engineering, Fundamentals of the Chemical Process Safety and Design of structures under fire. IIT Gandhinagar has also become a member of the Safety and Chemical Engineering Education SACHE program of the American Institute of the Chemical Engineers (AIChE), which provides teaching material and programs that bring elements become process safety into the student curriculum and also access to the wide range of educational materials prepared by AIChE’s Centre for the Chemical Process Safety. Regular Industry visits and field trips are arranged for a first-hand view of how the concepts covered in classes translate to industrial practice. The Safety Centre is also exploring the potential of developing minor and certificate courses as well as graduate programs in industrial safety in the coming years.
