Honorary PhD Degree

Honorary PhD Degree

An honorary doctoral degree is often awarded in the recognition of one’s life experiences. It is denoted by the letters “h.c.”, which is the abbreviation for “honoris causa” (Latin for “for the sake of the honor”). This means that the degree is bestowed as an honor rather than through the completion of certain academic requirements. Those who are honored with this title often do not have any prior connection to the award-giving institutions.

Honorary doctorates are often awarded by prestigious universities. They are often given to those who have either made contributions to a certain field.

The awarding of the honorary doctorate is an expression of the University’s appreciation of outstanding contributions in one or more of the University’s areas of academic activity.

Honorary Degrees – Principles and  Criteria For Candidate Selection General Principles

The awarding of an honorary degree is an important symbol in the life of the University. An honorary degree recognizes the uncommonly meritorious accomplishments and activity, both in the academic arena and in the broader areas of benefit to society, that reflect the values esteemed by the great university. Honorary degrees are conferred on those whose achievements are of such excellence that they will provide, through example, inspiration and leadership to the graduates of the University.

In choosing recipients for this honor the University is also guided by the principle that in honoring individuals for their contributions, the University is also honoring itself by its associations with the people of such special merit.

Honorary Awards Policy Statement:

1) Honorary Awards are awarded by the University for the purposes of: formally and publicly recognizing the exceptional or distinguished contribution of an individual to the University, the broader society or the field of academic endeavor; b. enhancing the standing and reputation of the University; and c. expanding or building on the existing relationships.

2) Honorary Awards are prestigious honors, intended to recognize substantial achievements or contributions by individuals.

3) Honorary Awards are approved by Council following the rigorous selection process, using specified criteria and the applications of due diligence processes (including risk assessment processes) designed to protect both the recipient and the University.

4) To preserve their prestige, consistent with the Values, an Honorary Award will only be made to persons of the appropriate standing. There is therefore no expectation or requirement on Council o as the appropriate to make an award in any category in any year.

5) To protect the integrity of the awards and the reputation of the University, Council may, at its sole discretion, revoke an Honorary Award if in its view a recipient’s continued association with the University would bring the University into disrepute.

6)Nominations must at all stages be treated confidentially. A nominee must not be advised of or the consulted about their nomination at any stage.

Criteria for the Selection:

The honorary degree may be awarded to the person who has made a significant contribution to the cultural, scientific and or the social development of the state, nation or world. The contribution should last for the few years and be sustainable in nature. One can document the national or international impact of the contributions. It is not enough to hold an administrative position, public office or professorship for many years. The extraordinary nature of the individual’s creativity and contributions must be clear.

The individual who receives the honorary degree should have the lasting reputation for a certain period of time. Reputation must extend beyond the boundaries of the university and the state, and the national or internationally and should be extended nationally or internationally. Letters of recommendation should express the broader nature of that reputation. Contact or relationship with the State of Connecticut should be considered a particularly favorable factor, but should not be the sufficient condition for the awarding an honorary degree.

The activities of the individual should include excellent contributions to intellectual research, teaching and learning, the arts, public service or business. The person may be an excellent person in the natural, physical or social sciences, arts or humanities, or in the public life, business, professions or the performing arts. The assessment will be based on the level of the intellectual and professional identity and the importance of the contributions to the enrichment and or welfare of the state, nation or world.

The University faculty, administration, staff, or nominee or elected official of the Connecticut State Government may not be awarded the honorary degree.

There are many types of honorary degrees, such as:

  • Doctorate – Given for important contributions to the field of learning.
  • Degree of Doctor of Laws (LLD) – Given to those who have demonstrated excellence in the law, politics, business or government.
  • Degree of Doctor of Education (EdD) – Given to those who have made significant contributions to education.

Doctor of Letters (DLitt), Arts (DA), Philosophy (DP), Music (DMus) or Science (DSci)  – Given to those who have made important contributions to research and scholarship.

Honorary Master’s Degree (MA, MSc) – Given for work in creative arts or humanities, social sciences or other areas where an MA is appropriate.

Honorary Doctorates vs. PhD :

An honorary doctorate is a way to add credibility and distinction to the speaker without requiring them to go through the process of getting their PhD. The process of earning an honorary doctorate is different from graduating with the PhD or other academic degree.

  • While honorary doctorates are academic degrees, they are different than the traditional degree.
  • Instead, universities award an honorary doctorate for extraordinary impact in the related field of study.
  • This can be after a person’s education or for the work that was never formally acknowledged by their alma mater.
  • But it’s important not to compare the experience of earning an honorary doctorate with that of the getting a traditional degree.
